News: Twitter buys Tweetdeck and lands in London

Tech City success story Tweetdeck, just three years old, is sold to Twitter for circa £25 million. Twitter creates first office outside the US, sharing with Tweetdeck.

The latest success story to come out of East London’s Tech City is the sale of UK start-up Tweetdeck to Twitter, for a figure widely reported to be in the region of £25 million.

Tweetdeck was founded by Iain Dodsworth, a 36-year-old Formula 1 fanatic and father of two, in 2008. The software, which runs on desktop PCs and mobile devices, lets users filter Twitter messages easily, grouping people into columns, making it easier to follow large numbers of users. Twitter’s acquisition is the culmination of what Dodsworth has repeatedly referred to as ‘three crazy years’, watching his bedroom business blossom into a 15-strong outfit which has just become part of one of the biggest names on the web.

Not only that, but Tweetdeck’s offices in Tech City are now home to Twitter’s first base outside of San Francisco, making them the latest world-leading business to arrive in the area. The company’s European head of operations, Tony Wang, is now based at Tweetdeck – and will soon be joined by Rachel Bremer, who was recently announced as Twitter’s European Head of Communications.
