We’ve partnered with software platform Stripe to help uncover the new startup stack — the most commonly used tools by startups — and how this is changing the way we build internet businesses today.

Rather than buying warehouses of servers, writing every inch of code line by line, employing an entire team to process payments, and relying on spreadsheets and post-its for project management, more and more startups are plugging into cloud-based tools and infrastructure built by others.

We’re carrying out some simple research to better understand how this phenomenon is affecting startups, what specific tools make up the ‘new startup stack’ for tech entrepreneurs, and where entrepreneurs see the need for further development of tools to power new business creation.

In looking at this question, Stripe brings expertise in helping to grow some of the most exciting technology businesses in the UK, from international on-demand delivery services like Deliveroo through to innovative fintech platforms like Seedrs and iwoca.

The UK’s digital tech industries are growing 32% faster than the rest of the UK economy, with an estimated turnover of £161bn in 2014 and a workforce of 1.56m people across the UK. Over the past five years, a major development in this ecosystem has been the increasing availability of cloud-based tools and infrastructure that startups can plug into.
