Scotland

  • 7% of the total UK LinkedIn members population with tech skills are based in Scotland, whilst 13% of Scotland’s LinkedIn member population has tech skills.
  • Scotland has the highest concentration of LinkedIn members with tech skills in Oil and Energy – over three times the UK average (14% vs. 4%). The continued importance of the oil and gas industry cannot be understated – although its contribution has declined in recent years. Since the discovery of North Sea oil, and subsequent heights of exploitation through the 1970s and 80s there has been an aligned development of the petro-chemical industry, most notably concentrated in cities like Aberdeen. The concentration of members with tech skills in Oil and Energy is likely explained by the high-tech nature of the sector, and associated activity that has developed.
    Scotland is also above the UK average for concentrations of tech skills in Financial Services and Insurance (13%) and Government/ Education/ Non-Profit (12%)

  • Wales has the highest concentration of LinkedIn members with tech skills in Government/ Education/ Non-profit (16% vs. 10% UK average). The region has over double the UK average for concentration of tech skills in Manufacturing/ Industrial (7% vs. 3%) and above average concetrations of members with tech skills in Architecture & Engineering (9% vs. 8%) and Aero/ Auto/ Transport (6% vs. 5%) sectors.

West Midlands

  • 7% of the total UK LinkedIn member population with tech skills are based in the West Midlands, whilst 13% of the West Midland’s LinkedIn member population have tech skills.
  • The West Midlands has the highest concentration of members with tech skills in Aero/ Auto/ Transport (10% compared to 5% UK average). In the early 1970’s the West Midlands accounted for almost 60% of cars manufactured in the UK. Despite this having fallen over subsequent decades, the region remains a hotspot of automotive manufacture, as well as aeronautical engineering. Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls Royce and Tata Technologies have a significant presence in the region – and may explain the high proportions of members with tech skills in Aero/ Auto/ Transport sectors.
    The region is also above the UK average for concentrations of tech skills in Government/ Education/ Non-profit (12% vs. 10%) and Architecture & Engineering (9% vs. 8%).
  • The West Midlands is above the UK average for concentrations of members with tech skills in Information Technology function (16% vs. 15%).
